Model Forest Policy Program Seeks Great Lakes Communities for Climate Solutions Program

The Model Forest Policy Program (MFPP) works with rural communities on climate change adaptation. MFPP is currently accepting applications for new communities in the Great Lakes region to enroll in their Climate Solutions University, a 10-month educational curriculum and planning program. Two Michigan counties, Alger and Delta, have participated in previous years, and case studies and stories from their involvement can be viewed here. This year, MFPP is offering separate programs for adaptation planning and implementation, with each including funding support and educational practice and guidance. New Lake Superior Regulation Plan with State-of-the-Art Climate Research

The new Lake Superior Regulation Plan 2012 provides cutting-edge information regarding climate change impacts on the upper Great Lakes. Notably, the study reports lake levels will remain relatively constant, a change from prior projections. The report was wrtiten for the International Joint Commission (IJC) and marks the end of a $14.6 million dollar five-year study. Learn more »

Local Cherry Grower Concerns Related to Global Change

The mild weather of this winter has local cherry growers worried that a sudden drop in temperatures will harm their crop. The drastic change from the cold of last winter is not a random spike, reports NPR. The report quotes state climatologist and GLISA Core Team member Jeff Andresen, "It's not just noise. Climate Adaptation Continues Despite Politics

While a Pew survey recently reported that climate change ranks last among public priorities, GLISA Co-Director Tom Dietz points out these kinds of polls can misrepresent actual concern, especially regarding long-term challenges like climate change. Summary of GLISA Working Sessions 2011

GLISA held four working sessions in the sectors of Tourism, Agriculture, Water Management, and Urban Areas as part of the GLISA Annual Meeting 2011. These sessions asked stakeholders to think about their decision-making values, and how their decisions will be affected by a range of predicted climate factors. Reponses are shaping GLISA directions for the coming year.

The US Global Change Research Program has been developing a ten year strategic plan for Federal research aimed at understanding, assessing and responding to global change, as required by the Global Change Research Act of 1990. Developed by an interagency team, the Draft Strategic Plan for 2012-2021 is now available for public comment from any interested parties. GLISA Awards Funding to 5 Climate Change Projects
GLISA solicits, reviews, and selects research projects for funding on an annual basis. Funding priorities are determined, in part, with input from the Stakeholder and Science Advisory Committees.

GLISA co-sponsored this Erb Institute for Sustainable Enterprise town hall meeting on public understanding of climate risks and choices. The event was a unique opportunity to participate in a major gathering of the most innovative thinkers and leaders in the climate change debate. Opening remarks summarizing the day's workshop were presented by leading representatives from government, religious groups, business, academia and the non-profit sectors. The town hall dialogue and Q & A session were informed by the summary and key findings of a private workshop convening earlier the same day. Learn more »

This public lecture, "Are we getting enough crop per drop? Trends in global agricultural water use," was presented by Kate A. Brauman, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Minnesota's Institute for the Environment. Brauman's research focuses on the interaction of land-use change and water resources. GLISA Symposium 2011

The GLISA Symposium on November 3 featured speakers from the core management team and GLISA-funded projects. Speakers discussed research on downscaled climate data, stakeholder assessments, lake evaporation, and impacts on fisheries, water management, agriculture, and public health. The symposium concluded with a keynote address by Kathy Jacobs, director of the National Climate Assessment, who highlighted the new assessment design.
