Overview:
Cloquet, Minnesota is a city in Carlton County located approximately 20 miles southwest of the city of Duluth. It is situated alongside the St. Louis River, which flows into Lake Superior. The western portion of Cloquet lies within the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation, which is the land base of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
Cloquet’s proximity to Lake Superior plays a large role in its climate. The lake acts as a heat sink, keeping the surrounding area relatively cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Summers tend to be warm and not as hot or humid as more southern regions in the state. Precipitation falls primarily as rain during the summer, and nearly half of annual precipitation occurs from July to August. Thunderstorms are most common during the summer but can occur from March through November. Winters are cold and snowy, and they are influenced by cold polar air masses flowing south into the region from Canada.
