Overview:
Ironwood is located in Gogebic County in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, about a mile away from the Wisconsin border. The town is situated 18 miles south of Lake Superior. The lake, along with rivers, smaller lakes, and forests in the area, is increasingly used for recreational purposes. Lake Superior is also the dominant climactic controller for Ironwood.
Ironwood is part of the Lake Superior “Snowbelt,” meaning that it can experience heavy snow squalls during the winter due to its position relative to the lake. Ice cover also plays a part in the climate of Ironwood, as it influences over-lake winds. The area rarely experiences prolonged periods of heat in the summer or extreme cold in the winter.
