Overview:
In the valleys of the Driftless Area, La Crosse has a unique climate along the Mississippi River. Large bluffs on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin sides of the river enhance microclimate features and cause distinct temperature variations.
Typical warm summers and cold winters of a temperate climate are observed, with increased humidity from the river. Six-tenths of the La Crosse’s precipitation falls between April and September, mainly in thunderstorms. Severe thunderstorms, flash flooding, and riverine flooding are not uncommon in the spring and summer. In the winter, measurable snowfall occurs on about thirty days per snow year on average, similar to many areas across the Upper Midwest.
