Overview:
Located just 12 miles southwest of Lake Michigan, La Porte, IN is home to abundant recreation just outside the Chicagoland area. Warm summers typical of the Upper Midwest are common, while winters are moderated by the lake. Extreme minimum temperatures rarely reach -20°F in the winter as a result. Lake effects influence precipitation amounts strongly in the winter with favorable location and wind direction in respect to Lake Michigan.
Annual snowfall totals average over 60 inches per year, nearly double the amount at similar latitude stations in northern Illinois. The increase in liquid-equivalent winter precipitation leads to annual precipitation amounts around 3 inches higher than areas not affected by the lake.
